Until everybody has a digital tax account there are two main ways of doing your income tax online. These are using HMRC as online services or by using an agent who will file on your behalf.
The filing deadline is 31st January for online submissions except in the two situations:-
- 31 December – You want to pay income tax via your earnings under PAYE – your tax code will be adjusted.
- 30 December – You want the child benefit clawback unless you want to pay income tax via your tax code.
For submissions via HMRC you must allow at least 21 days to register and receive your online details.
Both HMRC and agents will supply tax calculations so that you know how much tax to pay and how the figure is arrived at. If you use the HMRC service it is your responsibility to check the calculation.
